"Simple setting - engaging theatre"

Freestate accomplishes the difficult task of putting two characters on stage and leaving them to tell an engaging story. Set in a London train station a homeless beggar (Clare Wilke) is befriended by a posh lady (Kerry Stockwell) seemingly looking to kill some time and fight the boredom of waiting for a train. A strange friendship develops between the pair as they verbally duel in order find a superior moral standing. As they talk their past is uncovered and new doorways opened that may not be the solution they were looking for.

Writer/Director Russell Mardell has done a great job with this script, he captures the two opposing characters brilliantly and continually tipping the scales to focus one or the other. Although Mel is an ineffectual beggar her sharp tongue and quick wit keep her from playing just victim. Equally as the story develops the confidence and icy cool exterior of the posh woman Frankie is shattered as she reflects on her deeds. The comic verbal sparring is a joy a watch and continually informs of the characters as well as slowly unraveling the plot.

The star of the show is undoubtedly Clare Wilke who has the ability to live her character rather than just play her. You can see the disappointment, the regret and anger in her eyes and although she dishes sharp one liners they rarely feel scripted. While Kerry does an admirable job, she appears to act her role, performing each line with gravitas right up to the full stop.
Freestate's bare set, limited props, lighting and sound demonstrate that gloss isn't needed when you have interesting characters and engaging an script.
